Mechanical Engineer - Liquid Metal Pumping Loop Design

Zap Energy is currently looking for an experienced, accomplished, self-motivated mechanical engineer to support the design and development of a primary liquid metal pumping loop. The liquid metal loop will serve as heat carrying media, fuel breeding blanket, radiation shielding, electric charge carrying media among other applications. This position requires experience with component design of fluid/gaseous pumping systems under vacuum services. Component design will include but is not limited to valves, pumps, pipping, vessels, among others. The position will entail pumping system and component design, including assembly of fluid loop systems to corroborate pumping power calculations, extract experimental data and refine component design.

This position will work with a multidisciplinary team of Zap Energy scientific, engineering, and technical staff on the design, assembly, and operations of advanced liquid metal loops for the next-generation Zap Energy SFS Z-pinch experiment. The mechanical engineer will also support pumping system assembly and testing. The ideal candidate is an organized, inventive problem solver, capable of working through technical challenges and employing sound, pragmatic solutions through team efforts.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Liquid metal loop component design.
  • Pumps, valves and plumbing design for liquid metal recirculating systems.
  • Support the design, build, testing, troubleshooting, and operation of one or more test stands involving liquid metals and high duty cycle cathodes under vacuum
  • Provide general support for z-pinch experiments as needed

Qualifications and Skills:

Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary environments
  • Experience in design, procurement, assembly, operations, and analysis of fluid recirculation systems.
  • Ability to formulate and execute experimental run campaigns
  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical component design for pumping systems.
  • FEA and CAD of mechanical components.
  • Data acquisition systems
  • Data analysis including reduction, interpretation, and error analysis
  • Excellent written and communication skills

 Preferred:

  • 5-10+ years post-M.Sc./M.Eng. experience in liquid/gaseous mechanical systems.
  • Liquid metal pumping systems.
  • Magnetic pump and liquid metal valves design experience
