Senior Pulsed Power Engineer

Zap Energy is currently looking for an experienced High Voltage Pulsed Power Engineer to design, test, operate, and troubleshoot pulsed power components and systems. The Engineer will also be involved in future work consisting of a novel repetitive pulsed power system design and test. This position will work with other Zap Energy scientific, engineering, and technical staff on the design, assembly, fielding, and operations of the next-generation Zap Energy SFS Z-pinch experiment and associated pulsed power systems and diagnostic electronics. The ideal candidate is an organized, inventive problem solver, capable of working through technical challenges and employing sound, pragmatic solutions through team efforts. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer. Position level will depend on experience. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 
  • Design, build, test, operate, and troubleshoot repetitive pulsed power components and systems 
  • Perform detailed analysis of pulsed power systems – simulations, EM analysis, thermal modeling and analysis of test data
  • Work with various team members from concept to test to ensure we meet requirements and provide solutions  
  • Provide general experimental support for design, assembly, fielding, and operations of Zap Energy research experiments 
  • Provide technical expertise on CAD design, document requirements and procedures
  • Apply technical expertise to analyze problems, troubleshoot issues and provide solutions
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians on pulsed power systems
Qualifications and Skills: 
Required: 
  • 5-7+ years in Pulsed Power/High Voltage Electronics design and test experience 
  • Strong electrical and mechanical understanding of pulsed power systems – theory and application
  • Experience with building pulsed power systems and working with high power gas based and solid state switches
  • Strong knowledge and hand on experience of Pulsed power diagnostics and operation of various pulsed power instrumentation
  • Data analysis including reduction, interpretation, and error analysis 
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned projects, working with technical staff 
  • Excellent Technical writing skills and strong communication skills
 Preferred: 
  • Familiarity in design, procurement, assembly, fielding, operations, and analysis of fusion plasma physics experiment or repetitive power pulsed experiments 
  • Familiarity with Control System, LabVIEW, safety and operation of Pulsed power systems
The estimated salary range for this position is $120k - $170k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications.  Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.
