Mechanical Engineer--Liquid Metal Pumping Loop Design

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Individually contribute to Zap Energy’s liquid metal heat transfer loop design and ancillary equipment
  • Support the design, build, testing, troubleshooting, and operation of one or more test stands involving liquid metals and high duty cycle cathodes under vacuum
  • Provide general support for z-pinch experiments as needed
Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
  • Experience in the design, procurement, assembly, safe operations, and analysis of first of a kind testing equipment
  • Ability to write and read piping and instrumentation diagrams, single line diagrams, and equipment requirements
  • Rudimentary understanding of basic fabrication and welding techniques
  • Demonstrated use of LabVIEW, or other software, for data acquisition, instrumentation/control, and automation of custom equipment
  • Analysis, interpretation, and visualization of large datasets using Python, or other software
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in multidisciplinary environments
 Preferred:
  • Five or more years of hands-on experience with a high temperature fluid (liquid metal, molten salt, supercritical carbon dioxide) pertaining to their use with advanced energy systems
  • Previous experience selecting and implementing high temperature hydraulic and fluid equipment (pumps, pressure vessels, valves, fittings, heat exchangers, heaters, insulation)
  • Firm grasp of heat transfer in forced convection systems
  • Familiarity with mechanical design codes, such as ASME BPVC or ASME B31, and their application to high temperature systems
  • Previous use of gloveboxes and other inert atmosphere techniques to handle air and moisture sensitive materials
The estimated salary range for this position is $120k-$175k. Candidates may be considered for other positions at Zap Energy and actual salary will be based on relevant education, experience, and other qualifications. Range is published in accordance with Washington Equal Pay and Opportunity Act.
